Why is it that when I try to chat in a yahoo games room the letters that I type all come out as numbers ?

I play yahoo spades. At game tables when I try to type into the chat bar the letters that I type all apear as numbers. The numbers arent assigned to any particular letter instead no matter what key i type into the chat box it comes out as consecutive digits 1 thru 0. This is very frustrating!!! If i dont get an answer soon I am giving up on Yahoo all together.
