What's the consequences of wiring an Alternator backwards?

I put the red wire (from back post with battery cable) into spade #1 and the black wire into spade #2, when it's supposed to be the other way around. Found out late, after i already driven it a few miles. It drove, but wouldn't hold a charge and a burning smell appeared when i was driving it. Haven't had the time to drive it with the correct set-up yet. Just curious if i burned it up or the battery?
